A thoughtful and thought provoking post. Much has taken place since, the estimate of the leak rate having risen to as much as 60K and the foul weather already impacting efforts. We see an industry in deny and coverup mode. They're still way too successful at both for my liking. At least the president succeeded in getting them to put up some serious cash.

But I think the most dangerous development to tarnish any potential silver lining is the jobs factor. Even Democrat Landrieu is <a href="http://landrieu.senate.gov/mediacenter/pressreleases/06-11-2010-1.cfm" title="Landrieu Offers President Obama Alternatives to Six-Month Deepwater Drilling Moratorium" rel="nofollow">saying</a> they can't extend the moratorium more than 6 months, they need to get people back to work even sooner.

In my wildest dreams I see all the copy-and-paste-our-disaster-response oil companies forced to ante up $200 billion and more to pay everyone's salary until we're up and running with alternative energy or they go broke, whichever comes first. And every one of those smug misanthropes loses their home and livelihood and goes to haul shrimp with the "little people" on the Gulf coast. But I'm not convinced we've heard the last of "shakedown," and everything we know of Obama tells us he's more interested in consensus than following through on the principles I believed he stood for when I cast my vote for change I believed in.

Feed them to the beast they worship, the Market: a tax on carbon emmisions, a serious "robust" one with no loopholes, is the only thing that can force these people to change their behaviour. Will the robust carbon tax go the way of the robust public option?

The fine print on Obama's "change we can believe in" <a href="http://www.barackobama.com/index.php?splash=false" title="" rel="nofollow">message</a> has always been "not just in my ability to bring about change in Washington, but in yours."

So there it is... the onus is on us. I guess that's what you mean by "Endless Pressure."

Hi Brock, I'm your distant cousin. We shared an email or two in 2001. I've changed my email address. Are you on FaceBook? With another side of my family, I started a FB group for cousins to share what they know of their family history. It's going well and I'd like to start one for my Evans cousins. Most know each other, but you are a bit more distant and may help us connect with other distant cousins. Would you be interested? You can find me on FB with my email heather.davis2007@gmail.com or my name Heather Evans Davis Best wishes, Heather

Hello Brock,

We haven't communicated for a long time- I was making the rounds in Congress about 12 years ago over timber issues, and may now have hit upon a solution. Thanks for your help and encouragement in those days, but the way.

Please send me an email and I'll copy you on something I sent to some mutual friends. Your input could really help here.

Hello, Mr. Evans, thank you for this inspiring post. I am the son of wilderness defender and landscape photographer Philip Hyde, who worked tirelessly on the North Cascades National Park campaign as well as many of the other battles in the Northwest and all over the West. Did you ever meet my father? I have seen your name in a lot of Sierra Club material and mentioned by Mike McCloskey and many others. Perhaps this is a conversation for private correspondence. What I wanted to say here is that your message is a good reminder because people at times get discouraged by how much money and power is on the side of greed. As you help us remember, conservationists have often prevailed despite the daunting opposition, and despite the overall appearances of the natural world declining. Also, in some cases, even big corporations are changing and coming more into alignment with nature. Hopefully we can stop or transform the dirtiest polluters and exploiters before it is too late.
